![]() If you recall the same thing over and over, it can get further and further away from the original memory as the information becomes hazy and imperfections multiply ("wait, was Larry there? Yeah probably. It's retrieving information about the memory which it uses to rebuild and reconstruct the memory live in the present moment. To illustrate this, a little fact about human memory: every time you remember an event or situation, your brain isn't retrieving and displaying the memory. It's the same thing.Ī simple answer is that you can't ask the same question twice. Or you could take a walk through the park. It might help to see the whole process as a dialogue. The Yi is not a vending machine that spits an answer every time you throw 3 coins to it. You can't let any one else tell you what it means (that might be one of the reasons why there were no Yi interpretations in early China). What it means to you is what you yourself have to discover. You will not get what you want, you will get what you need. You also have to realise that the answer is meaningful to you - even though you don't understand one bit of it. In other words, it is interesting to see how these hexagrams compare (especially on a trigram level). If you ask the same question several times (which actually was quite common in early China) the successive hexagrams can be seen as deeper layers of the first hexagram. Maybe I should throw again.' But there is no better answer than the one you originally got. If you have trouble accepting that as a starting point you will also have trouble using the Yijing - every answer that you don't like will make you think 'maybe I did something wrong. The hexagram/answer that you get by using chance is the best and most objective answer you can get to your current situation. This is how it works for me: You use chance (throwing coins or the yarrow stalks method) to obtain insights from the Book of Changes. Maybe the Yi is simply not your kind of oracle. Or maybe you don't connect with the language of the Yi. Working with the Yi can sometimes be hard work. Maybe you haven't found the right way to see the meaning that fits your situation. If you don't find them meaningful you can ask yourself why that is the case. I think you want prove that the Yi really works, no? The only way to find that out is to see if you find the answers meaningful. At the same time, as a sceptic, you know this is not possible. It seems you expect the Yi to answer in a way that does not correspond to these probabilities. It is good to be sceptic, but the simple statistics of probability also show that there is a relatively small chance that you will receive exactly the same hexagram twice. The Yijing is real: it is a book, you can touch it.
